The Forest Park Air Force Base was established in 1942 as the Georgia Air National Guard's provisional airfields. It served as an important training ground for pilots and radar operators during World War II. In 1948, Forest Park became a permanent military installation and was renamed Fort Benning AFB. The Falcons football team has been at Fort Benning since 1951, making it one of only two NCAA Division I institutions to have a football program continuous from its inception through current day (the other is USC). In the 1960s, Fort Benning AFB began to be enlarged with an additional million dollars in appropriations from Congress. This money was used to build new barracks, improve infrastructure, and purchase equipment including A-10 Thunderbolt II fighter jets and F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters. Today, Fort Benning AFB is home to more than 12,000 military members and their families who use its facilities for missions ranging from joint duty operations in Afghanistan to deployments around the world. One of the most interesting aspects of airforce gift history at this facility is that many different types of items have been given away over time. Forest Park, Georgia is a small city located in northeast Georgia. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. Forest Park is known for its rich history and natural resources that have made it an important tourist destination in the area. The city of Forest Park was founded in 1883 by William Pemberton and his wife Sarah Woodruff, who donated 2,000 acres of land to the city. The first public park in Forest Park was called Pemberton Grove. In 1904, the City Council voted to name the park after General George Washington Carver because he had contributed so much to the development of Atlanta. Since its inception, Forest Park has seen many changes. In 1916, when it was annexed by Atlanta,forest park became one of the largest cities within Atlanta limits with a population over 20,000 people. However, during World War II, forest park lost most of its population as soldiers moved into the city to fight in war. After the war ended, most residents returned home and businesses reopened while tree planting began on what would later become known as Carver Plaza which still sits today.) Forest Park, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Northwest corner of Atlanta and Druid Hills Roads. The name Forest Park comes from two places: one was a swampy lot near by Peachtree Street and the other was a tract of forest land that still exists today about 7 miles east of downtown Atlanta on Interstate 85. The first settlers in Forest Park were white men who came to explore what lay ahead on account of its potential for agriculture and trade with Latin America. They named their new settlement after an old plantation where they had been held as slaves. By 1819, there were only three families living in Forest Park: James Crain, his wife Mary and children John, Martha Jane (later Mrs. Andrew Jackson) and Jesse Hancock; all others had left during the American Revolution or died during the war. In 1825, James Crain donated land to make into a park which would include parts of Druid Hills Road today as well as some woods near present-day Terminus Road. The first public meeting to consider creating Forest Park took place on February 17th that year ended with resolutions approving donation from Crain's heirs and appointing commissioners to purchase more land from adjoining landowners west of I-85 for park purposes. The first public parkland was dedicated in November 1827 when General Gabriel Ross open sourced part of Druid Hills Road for use as a public square including trees, benches, fountains and walks throughout the area now called Forest Park Avenue (now I-285). In 1830s several houses were built along present day Donelson Highway adjacent to Five Points shopping center which also included grocery store then known as Pemberton's Grocery & Provision Store before it became JCPenney department store sometime between 1925&1970s but it has not been preserved or studied yet so no accurate information can be provided about its history currently
