Fayetteville is a city in northwest Georgia, United States. The population was 153,047 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fayette County and home to the University of Arkansas Fayetteville campus. The name "Fayetteville" originates from General Andrew Jackson's stay here in 1807 during his campaign for President of the United States. During Jackson's time as military governor of Georgia, he ordered that the town be named after him. This event led to a general store being built in what is now downtown Fayetteville and later called "Jackson's Store." Fayetteville has been inhabited by humans since early historic times. A mound near present-day downtown was established around 1000 BC as an ancient Egyptian burial ground for generals and political leaders who had died in battle or were executed under Pharaohs Amenmesse I and II. In 1860, when Alabama became a state, Fayetteville became its capital; but it remained independent until 1907, when it joined the newly formed Georgia State Legislature as Atlanta's second city (after Savannah). The first permanent settler in what is now downtown Fayetteville was James Whitehead, who arrived there on October 14, 1795 with twentyfive other men from Augusta County, Georgia. He erected a log cabin on what is now Third Street between Broad and Marbury Streets; this was soon followed by others until about 1800 by John Whitehead and his family including his wife Elizabeth (née Clayton), their four children: James (born December 12th1796), John (born January 9th1802), Jemima (born February 25th1804) and Eliza Jane ( born March 5th1807). They also raised eight horses which they used to cart goods to market back then through Ridgecrest Road down into Augusta County where they sold to farmers east of Decatur Creek.. It wasn't until 1820 that DeKalb County was organized out of Etowah Valley territory west of Gadsden River that land began flowing available for farming within modern-day Fayetteville limits; this area around today’s Fourth Street/John Whitehead Boulevard intersection would become known as Old Town – founded by Capt’n [James] Hogg on July 11th 1821 when he platted off part of what are today Fourth Street between Court Avenue NW and Walnut Street NW.. Also located hereabouts were Captain Adam Beard’s home built about 1800 near present day Depot Square NE corner First Ave./Walnut Street NE., adjacent to where “Beard’s Ford” enters into today’s Druid Hills neighborhood just southwest thereof.. Northeast along Court Avenue NW from Walnut Street NW towards Interstate 75 ended up becoming Downtown/Andrew Jacksontown starting about 1830 with different names such as Hicksborough before finally coming full circle back around 1850 when Andrew Jackson decided it should be renamed appropriately given all that had happened recently in history related thereto such as Ulysses S. Grant occupying Tennessee valley etc.; thus we have: Downtown - antecedent name given originally to Andrew Jacksontown while continuing use throughout period thereafter Etowah Valley - location where land flowed available for farming within modern-day FayetteVILLE limits starting about 1800 Gadsden River - location whence landflowed available for farming within modern-day GA boundaries beginning about1800
