In 1802, General Andrew Jackson and his army occupied Fayetteville. The town had been founded by James Fenton in 1799. By 1800, the population of Fayetteville was about 100 people. Through its military occupation, Fayetteville became a center for trade and commerce. In 1802, the town was renamed from Magna Carta to Jacksonborough in honor of General Jackson. The town slowly began to grow as a result of its economic importance and its access to transportation including wagon roads and rivers. In 1834, the town had a population of 350 people and it was designated as the county seat of Coffee County. The courthouse located in downtown Fayetteville remained operational until 1906 when it was replaced by the current building on Elm Street. During World War II, Fayetteville became an important stop on the supply route between Atlanta and North Africa because of its strategic location at the junction of two major roads that connected those regions. After the war, many businesses closed down but some others such as Coca-Cola continued operations until they were acquired by Pepsi-Cola in 1957. The present day downtown area is still home to many businesses that have operated there throughout history including Macy's Department Store which opened in 1911 and is now part of Macy's Incorporated (Macy's) operation worldwide
Fayetteville was founded in 1796 as a small settlement on the Chattahoochee River. In 1802, the United States acquired what is now Georgia from Spain and named it after General James K. Polk. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period, and by 1848 it had reached its current size. During the Civil War, Fayetteville became an important military and supply base for the Confederate army, and many of its residents fought in that conflict. After the war, Fayetteville continued to grow rapidly, becoming one of the largest U.S. cities by 1860. By 1870, however, Fayetteville's growth had slowed due to economic decline and a lack of access to resources. However, during Reconstruction years (1868-1877) Fayetteville experienced a significant renaissance thanks to support from local politicians and businesses. This period is also known for sawing off part of downtown's walls in an effort to make way for new housing developments; this event is celebrated as "The Wall Street Demolition." In 1932, Fayetteville became an independent city under then- Mayor John Blythe; it has since undergone several surges in population due to various factors such as suburban development and heavy job growth within city limits over the past few decades.
