Fayetteville is a city in and the county seat of Fayette County, Georgia, United States. The population was 44,868 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Fayette County after Decatur. Fayetteville was founded on December 22, 1796 as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolutionary War. It was named for General George Washington. In 1801, it became capital of Georgia and remained so until 1837 when Athens became the state's capital. The site where Fayetteville now stands was chosen to be the new capital because its location midway between Atlanta and Savannah made it an attractive target for attack by Confederate forces during the Civil War. During Reconstruction in America, Fayetteville played a significant role in helping to bring about racial equality in America despite continued discrimination by white supremacists and other enemies of Reconstruction policies across much of southern California. In 1865, General Nathaniel Banks' Union army attacked Fayetteville from within its limits as part of his general operations against Confederate leaders south ofAtlanta known as Operation Crossroads; this attack failed but caused great damage to downtown areas including many homes which still stand today. Afterward, Reconstruction ended before any serious efforts were made to regenerate downtown areas; instead most shops moved away from downtown towards suburbs or outlying districts such as Druid Hills or Johns Creek which had larger populations than their predecessors due to increased industrial development throughout central Atlanta during that time period (though some stores did stay open under different names). In 1886–87 one of Atlanta's leading architects designed what is considered one of Atlanta's first popular hotel buildings: The New Southern Hotel at Oneonta Street near Peachtree Road (now University Avenue). This building served as headquarters for several years for local government bodies before being converted into apartments around 1915–16 while another prominent architect designed what is now Hartsfield-Jackson Airport complex on DeKalb Avenue just west side Interstate 85/I-285 with separate gates for both commercial and military flights (the original airport parking lot still survives adjacent to I-85/I-285). The post office located at 411 W Main St./Monument Boulevard east side also helped contribute greatly to overall growth in downtown areas during this time period with its two large mailboxes still extant today (#1010 E Main St./Pine Street NE) along with numerous small businesses that popped up all over town during this era including several banks/post offices (#397 S Broadwalk SE), bookstores (& several grocery stores)), cigar store(s), car dealership(s), barbershop(s), dancehall(s)/grindhouse(s)), movie theater(-es), opera house/-es etc.; however those days are long gone with present day brick buildings housing various types apartments & businesses instead Downtown area has become more commercialized mainly featuring highrise complexes & apartment towers especially near à Light Rail Transit station [an underground light rail line serving Downtown streetcar ridership]
