Fairburn is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,195 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1811 by James Fairburn and his family as a post station on the Chattahoochee River. In 1835, James Fairburn donated land to form what is now Fairburn Township. In 1886, Fairburn became an incorporated settlement with a three-member board of trustees and a mayor/council system. In 1912, the township name was changed toFairburn Village to reflect its growing importance as a commercial center. On November 3, 1920, Fairburn's first school opened up shop for students grades one through five in what is now known as Old High School Annex #1 (now called Steele Middle School). The first teacher was Mrs. Lovie Atchison who taught until 1932 when she moved to Decatur and later Newnan. The building that housed Old High School Annex #1 still stands today and houses Steele Middle School today which is also known as the "First Baptist Church of Fairburn." From 1922-1927 there were also two other schools that operated in this annex - First Baptist Junior/Senior High School (later renamed Steele Intermediate School) and First Presbyterian Elementary/Junior High School (later renamed Steele Senior High Schools). On March 5th, 1927 Grades 6-8 started attending Lamar Park SecondarySchool which then became known as fair burn Tech from 1962 until 1993 when it merged into Gwinnett Technical College after being privatized by Gwinnett County government. Finally on December 1st 1976 all grades combined attend Lamar Park SecondarySchool which remained called fair burn Tech until current day due to mergers between various entities within Gwinnett County government including Gwinnett Technical College

Fairburn was founded in 1784 by the brothers David and Solomon Fairburn. The Fairburn family had come to Georgia from Scotland in the late 1700s. They became landowners and developed a trading post at what is now Fairburn Village. In 1802, they built the first store in what is now downtown Fairburn. The village grew rapidly, and by 1820 there were seventeen homes, twelve stores, four churches, and three schools. In 1824, the fairgrounds were completed on the south side of town. The fairgrounds remain an important part of the town's history today. The early years of Fairburn were difficult for its residents because of its location on some of the most bitterly contested land in Georgia. By 1830, however, growth had slowed as settlers began to build more permanent homes and businesses around the village center. This period saw a significant decrease in violence between farmers and slaves; instead, it became a time when citizens contributed to local charities and organized their own societies for social welfare purposes (such as Ladies Benevolent Order). In 1840, two men named John Coker and James Dyer purchased 1/4 acre (0.27 hectare) of land west of town from David Fairburn for $8 per acre (0.30 m2). Coker operated a gristmill on that property until his death in 1868; later that year, his son Jonathan acquired additional land near Coker's mill site which he used to establish Kirby Plantation near present-day Sumter Avenue and Patton Street. Kirby was one of several plantation proprietors who collaborated with state officials during Reconstruction to maintain white supremacy after Reconstruction ended in 1865 . Today much remains unchanged about life among these early Georgian settlers: their homespun clothing patterns; their way of eating apple butter with cinnamon sugar; their fondness for horseback riding or hunting hogs off leash at night before retiring to sleep; even their traditional ways of saying "goodnight."

In the 1830s, Fairburn became known as the "breadbasket" of Atlanta because it was the location where many immigrants coming to America found work. The town also developed into an important agricultural center and manufactured goods such as flour and saddles were exported to Europe. By the turn of the century, Fairburn had become a well-to-do community with several thousand residents. However, during World War I, Fairburn's economy crashed as a result ofthe war effort.
