Fairburn is a town in Muscogee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Fairburn is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what became Fairburn was John Pritchard who came to the area in 1807. A post office called "Fishkill" was established in 1824, and later renamed "Farnborough". In 1835, a store by the name of "Guthrie's Ferry" was donated by James Guthrie and it served as a stop on the old circuit road from Athens to Decatur. In 1838, Alexander Caldwell donated land for a gristmill on Catawba Creek which became known as Caldwell Mill. In 1840, three men - Samuel Chapman (a whitesmith), Matthias Rankin (a blacksmith) and David Rankin (a farmer) - founded an agricultural society known as Rankin & Chapman No. 2 Agricultural Society to improve farming practices around hereabouts. That same year saw the opening of one of only two schools in Muscogee County -gradeschool Fairburn Female Seminary which opened with instruction in reading and writing but soon offered courses in agriculture also. The first post office hereunder was established on December 15th 1840 by Colonel John Hartsfield with Fenton listed as his residence along with Henry Herndon serving as Postmaster until1846 when he resigned for lack of patronage; Captain Wm Dickey then took over operations until October 1st 1861 days after Petersburg had been burned leaving Fairburn without any mercantile or educational facilities other than a few scattered stores). Fairburn is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,581 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Cobb County and second-most populous community in Georgia after Atlanta. Fairburn is also one of the oldest towns in Cobb County. The town was named for Colonel James Fairburn, who had come to the area as an explorer during the American Revolutionary War. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson founded a military academy here known as Jackson's Academy and later turned it into a law school. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Fairburn became part of newly created Cobb County. The post office here was established on December 9, 1807. In 1837–38, John Newton built a sawmill around which many small communities grew up around it; these included Auburn (1839), Mount Olivet (1840), Indian Creek (1841), and White Hall (1842). When cotton prices rose in the 1840s and 1850s, some farmers began to grow other crops such as corn and rice instead of cotton; by 1860 about one-third of all land in Cobb County had been plantations . However, cotton remained an important crop until after World War II when production switched to new industrial techniques
Fairburn was founded in 1792 by James Fairburn, a Scottish farmer. The town rapidly grew and prospered as a cotton-producing center, becoming one of the most important eastern cotton ports. In 1828, Fairburn was renamed Atlanta after the city of Atlanta, Georgia.
