Fairburn was one of two communities in Fulton County chosen for incorporation as a city on December 12, 1868. The other was Decatur. The first settlers to Fairburn were sharecroppers who arrived in 1867 from central Alabama and Georgia. By 1890 the town had a population of 500 people and it grew rapidly during the early 20th century with an influx of farmers and others seeking inexpensive land near Atlanta to build homes or start businesses. In 1925, following annexation by Atlanta, Fairburn's population reached 100,000 and its downtown became world-famous for its Art Deco architecture which reflected new trends in American life at that time such as Woman's Rights (the Women's Building was completed in 1928). Jackson's move came as a surprise to most Georgians because he was considered a moderate Democrat and they expected him to support their party's candidate for president, James K. Polk. However, when Jackson arrived in Fairburn on July 4th, 1814 (the day before freedom Day), he announced that he would be moving his headquarters permanently to Chattanooga because of its proximity to the Mississippi River and its potential for greater military glory. During Jackson's presidency, Fairburn experienced some growth with new businesses opening up such as Aiken & Johnston boatyards and Roebuck & Company lumber yards. Additionally, several churches were built including Methodism Episcopal Church which still stands today and First Baptist Church which burned down in 1917 but was rebuilt within less than two years. Despite these positives however, by 1830 Fairburn's population had dwindled by half due to diseasecarrying mosquitoes that were resistant to most traditional methods of controlling them such as water bucket dipping or applying vinegar]. By 1860 only 350 people lived in Fairburn while it had lost all its commercial significance following the American Civil War;[a][i] it ceased being an incorporated municipality effective December 15th 1871].
