Fairburn is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,993 at the 2010 census. Fairburn is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name "Fairburn" was given to the town by General John Buford during his brief time as Commandant of the Third Infantry Regiment of Georgia Volunteers in 1854. The first settlers in what would become Fairburn came from Eastern Tennessee and were farmers who had migrated to this area in search of better land and opportunities. By 1875, there were only a few hundred residents living in what would become Fairburn. However, within a few years, production on the local cotton plantations had begun to decline due to changing technology and increased competition from other countries. In 1910, fairgrounds were established in downtown Fairburn and continue to be used today as an open-air music festival and agricultural exposition respectively. In 1930-1931, construction began on a new courthouse which would serve as the seat for both Fulton County (then known as Liberty Township) and Fairburn Township government. The courthouse was completed just before World War II put an end to its use as a courthouse; it was instead turned into apartments until it was replaced by the current courthouse in 1984-1985. During World War II, Fairburn became home to US Army Air Forces Station Alphys Airfield Number 2 (now Kadena AB), one of two such airfields located on Georgians' soil during that war; Alphys AFB also housed Camp McCoy POW camp during that time period. After hostilities ended, most military units returned home but Alphys AFB continued operation untilactivated early 1948 following Japan's surrender). Fairburn is a city in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clarke County. The name "Fairburn" derives from the Cherokee word ʔa-rā-kīn meaning "the place where the cotton trees grow." The first permanent settler in what would become Fairburn was James Fenton in 1827. He and his family moved to this location from Athens, Alabama two years earlier. In 1830, John Smith also moved to Fairburn after purchasing land here from Fenton. For many years it was one of the most rural areas in Clarke County - only a few miles wide and long with no railroad or highway access. In 1868, as part of Reconstruction policies following the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell stationed troops here for brief periods while he rebuilt his army at Fort Butler on nearby Savannah River. When hostilities ended these troops were discharged and returned home; however, they continued to live and work in Fairburn until 1870 when all white men must leave newly acquired black towns under orders issued by Confederate Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest. This order applied equally to white and black residents alike so there were no African Americans living in town prior to its incorporation into Clarke County on December 12th of that year by a joint resolution of both houses of Congress (the first such incorporation within Georgia). As a result of this integration policy some businesses closed down due to lack of customers while others struggled through difficult times before becoming successful again during post-integration times – Fairburn’s heyday came shortly thereafter when manufacturing started moving out central Georgia towards larger metropolitan areas like Atlanta and Chattanooga thanks to an expansionist government led by thenGovernor Ernest Johnson which supported industrial growth throughout the state outside ofAtlanta/Chattanooga/.
