Fairburn is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,794 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first known resident of what would become Fairburn was John Wilkinson who settled there in 1794. He and his family were among the earliest white settlers in what would become Fulton County. Wilkinson's son Alexander built a log cabin on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Decatur Street in 1807 and started to farm the land that now makes up Fairburn. In 1811, he married Martha (Harrison) Hill and they began to raise crops and livestock on their new property. In 1814, they became owners of an additional piece of land which included current-day Fairburn east of downtown Atlanta. The Wilkinson family soon developed a large orchard, barns, chicken coops, and other outbuildings on their expanded holdings which led to their nickname "The Gentry." In 1825, Andrew Johnson was elected President of the United States and Fairburn quickly became one of his favorite stops during his travels throughout Georgia and South Carolina. Johnson visited Fairburn twice during his term as President – once on January 20th while staying at Alexander's cabin on Chattahoochee River bank opposite modern day Decatur Street where he delivered remarks before a crowd of hundreds gathered to watch; again four days later when he stopped at nearby Johnsons' plantation just south of downtown Atlanta for dinner with then Governor Robert Ellington before departing for Richmond two days later On November 7th 1865 during the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Confederate forces under General Jubal Early near present day Douglasville Road/Highway 205 in what is today known as Battle Creek Township across from Uniontown Cemetery outside Ofalus Springs Village in Fulton County . After weekslong bloodshed resulting in over 50 dead including many from within the Randolph Plantation according to some reports up until then only black soldiers had been killed within Confederate lines since all civilians had already evacuated following orders from higher authorities prior to this event .
