East Point is a town in McDonough County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. A branch line from Atlanta to Decatur opened in 1892 and continued running through East Point until 1954; today's mainline rail service comes from Chattanooga through Decatur Junction into downtown Atlanta. Today many businesses located within or near downtown Chattanooga use the oldDecatur Branch Line corridor as their primary route to get to their customers inside or outside of Chattanooga proper - making this one of only a few towns in America along with midtown Manhattan and several other large cities that sees regional transportation hubs exclusively serving their respective neighborhoods instead of Downtown Anchorage or Midtown Detroit (although Midtown Memphis also sees some freight movement). Although many businesses have closed down over time, some remain active such as Oglethorpe Insurance Company which is still headquartered in downtown along with several other businesses that line Main Street including Morris Clothing Store (now defunct), Bankhead's Grocery Store (closed in 1984), Eastern Coal & Iron Works (closed in 1935), J R Wetherbee Cigar store (closed 1992) - all these business continue to operatealbeit without any storefront space currently available for them within their original buildings/landscapes!
