East Point is a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the eastern shore of Savannah River. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Savannah-Chatham metropolitan area and isadjacent to the cities of Savannah and Gwinnett County. The town was founded in 1824 as East Plantation by General James Wilkinson and his family as part of a land grant from King George III to Colonel James Wilkinson's son, Richard Wilkinson Sr., who had married into an influential Georgian family. In 1836, East Plantation became known as East Point after its founders moved there from nearby Fort Pulaski during Indian War II. The town name has been used continuously since then, even though it no longer occupies any original land grants or buildings dating back to 1824-1836. The first post office was established in 1827, but it closed in 1865 due to low postal rates being charged by competing companies at that time. However, a new post office reopened in 1868 named for General William Troup (1793-1872), who had served with distinction under Major General Andrew Jackson at Battle of Horseshoe Bend near present day Columbia Heights in Creek Nation and had helped lead General Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry into battle against Federal forces at Chickamauga National Park two years earlier. In 1886, East Point acquired an airfield named for Confederate general Robert Ewell Goode (1814-1900). Goode had unsuccessfully attempted to gain control over Atlanta during the American Civil War before moving northward and serving with Generals Jubal Early (1800-1875) and Averell Harriman (1807-1886). AfterAtlanta was captured by Union troops on September 17th, 1886 - just days after Goode's death - all military operations within city limits ceased until February 6th following orders from President James Kenedy Grant; Atlanta would become fully Union controlled six weeks later when Sherman surrendered it to Grant's forces at Appomattox Court House north of Richmond Sound.. East Point continued to grow rapidly during World War II due largely to its participation in production facilities for shipbuilding products such as aircraft parts or Victory Shipbuilders Inc.'s Liberty Ships line that were developed during wartime while also providing access to abundant natural resources like coal and oil which were critical for war efforts including ammunition production and fuel dumps necessary for military vehicles such as tanks and artillery pieces.. In 1949 Kipling wrote "A Dance with Dragons" set hereabouts...in this old plantation house / On this wide stream / Our Dragon King lived / And many brave knights fought beside him." This event takes place shortly thereafter when young dragon Smaug comes downriver seeking adventure ashore among humans only too happy to teach them some things about dragons!
