The Georgia National Guard has an extensive history in East Point, Georgia. The unit was founded on December 12, 1861, as the 2nd Regiment of Georgians by General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The regiment served in the Civil War and was mustered into service on July 1, 1865. After the war, the regiment disbanded on September 3, 1865. In 1933, the 2nd Regiment of Georgians was reactivated as a state guard unit at Athens-Clarke County Airport. It served until 1976 when it became part of the Georgia Army National Guard. In 1982, it was renamed to the 1st Battalion of Infantry (National Guard) and again assigned to Athens-Clarke County Airport before being deployed to Kuwait in 1991 as a support battalion for Operation Desert Storm. Since its inception as a national guard unit in East Point, Georgia, the 1st Battalion of Infantry (National Guard) has participated in many events and deployments across our state including: Gulf War I & II; Operation Iraqi Freedom; Hurricane Katrina; and Hurricane Rita.
East Point is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,316 at the 2010 census. The town is named for East Point on the Appomattox River. The first settler in East Point was John Fenton who came from England in 1819 and settled on the present site of East Point. He platted what is now known as Fenton's Landing on the Rappahannock River. In 1828, Capt. Nathaniel Wright founded Wrightstown on land he had purchased from Fenton. In 1829, Jno. Bartholomew built a small cabin near where today's Main Street intersection stands. In 1830, Elisha Harbison bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of swampy land east of Main Street and platted what is now called Harbisonville on it, naming it after his father-in-law Isaac Harbison Sr.. In 1831, Arent Hartsfield donated 2 acres (8 ha) southeast of Main Street to the town for use as a public square and schoolhouse; this donation remains an important part of Eastpoint history to this day.. By 1835, about 100 people lived in East Pointtown according to one source . About 1840 there were 5 stores and 25 families living in EastPointtown according to another source.. By 1850 there were only 9 residences with a total population of 158 peopleaccording to one source .. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 following the American Civil War, many homes were abandoned or used as barns or military barracks by the postmaster general's staff members during Reconstruction years until they were sold off or demolished during modern times .... During World War II most residents left for fear of Japanese air raids which began early that year .... After World War II most residents returned but some continued living outside the community into the 1970s .... Today almost all descendants of those original settlers are deceased except one family who resides in Rome Township ..... According to local legend starting around 1925 when an old man walking his dog discovered coal seams down deep within what is now known as "The Gully" between buildings near where Patterson Road intersects I-75 North he decided that if he could find enough coal so close to civilization then maybe someone else could also make money mining coal too ...... Coal production stopped around 1975 due mostly to changes brought about by new technology but some continue operations today .............

The militia Act of 1792 authorized the President of the United States to call forth the militia for a limited time in order to enforce federal law. The Militia Act also established the National Guard as an act of national security and created punitory guidelines for members of the military who desert their posts or neglect their duties. In 1816, Congress passed an act that raised national guard troops from one-third of all males over 21 years old to a two-thirds majority requirement. On October 15th, 1851, another act increased the percentage to three-fourths male age 21 and over. As more men enlisted in the National Guard, there was a need for larger storage facilities and officers’ quarters were constructed at various locations throughout America during this time period. On September 26th, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law An Act To Establish A National Defense Reserve Corps And To Grant Authority To Other Agencies To Receive Apprenticeship In The Crafts Of Arms And Armor By Nonresidents Of The United States Who Are eighteen Years Of Age Or Older Which Shall Be training In Such Arts Andcrafts As May Be Entertained By Young Men Within Three Months After Their Arrival In TheUnited States; And For Other Purposes Than That For Which They Were Named; Also With Respect To Military Forces_. This legislation made it possible for citizens who were not already enrolled in service in the armed forces (i.e., draftees) to become involved with the defense of America by enrolling in a reserve corps which would provide them with supplies and training while they waited until they could be called up into service. Another important development during this time was World War II when many Americans volunteered their services both inside and outside of America. Many people believed that if America was fighting WWII then we should have been able to do something about Korea but sadly that didn’t happen because our president chose to stay behind at home playing golf instead!

In 1685, the English settlers in Georgia Bayou founded East Point. This was a headland on the bayou that juts out into the Gulf of Mexico. The settlers named it for their favorite spot on the bayou - an islet called East Point Island. In 1764, English colonists transferred ownership of East Point to Spain for reasons unknown. It reverted back to British hands in 1768 when France acquired it from Britain. Spanish officials renamed it Fort San Antonio de la Bahia in honor of Governor Manuel de San Antonio y Costilla. In 1802, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and renamed it Tampa Bay because of its location at East Point's mouth. In 1821, during the Mexican-American War, General José María Vallejo established Fort Moultrie at nearby Stonington Island after capturing two American warships off Tampa Bay.
