East Point is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Fulton County and the population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The name "East Point" is derived from an Indian word meaning "the head of navigation". East Point is a town in Decatur County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. East Point is located on the Chattahoochee River and between Alpharetta and Suwannee counties. The first settlers in what would become East Point were white men from South Carolina named John McDowell and James Moultrie, who arrived in 1785 with a group of thirteen other colonists on the ship "Eagle". They were the first permanent residents of what would become East Point. The town was platted in 1792 by John Hargrave, Sr., one of Georgia's original proprietors. By 1802 it had grown to include two square miles (5 km²). In 1816 Colonel Thomas Jernigan founded Jernigan Academy which became one of the leading schools in Cobb County. In 1819 Eastern State School opened as a day school for girls under direction of Mrs. Anna Pritchett; it continued operation until 1958 when it merged with nearby Grady College to form Grady University. In 1864 rails were laid down through much of present-day east point connecting Atlanta with Chattanooga via open land north of town on DeKalb Avenue; this made possible agricultural production around town and contributed to its growth over time. The cotton gin was built by George Stephenson in 1865 at what is now known as Town Hall Square; east point prospered because it could offer buyers raw cotton that could be processed into finished products like clothes or cigars using local mills or factories such as those run by Jernigan & Sons cottagers’ cooperative dating back to 1824-25 Jernigan closed his mill after only eight years due to competition from more efficient mills across Georgia but he left behind an enduring legacy in eastpoint – an educational institution that continues today to educate women and provide opportunities for economic development across gender lines
