East Point, Georgia, is a small town located in the U.S. state of Georgia on the Savannah River. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. East Point is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is situated on the eastern edge of the city along Interstate 95. The history of East Point begins with early European settlers who arrived in 1785 to what is now East Point from Moorestown and other areas in South Carolina. In 1819, a group of Yankees had landed at Chattahoochee Bay and founded what became known as East Point on land that they had purchased from British colonists. The community's name derived from an Indian word meaning "high point." The first post office was established in 1827 and soon developed into a tiny hamlet with six buildings surrounded by farmland until it grew significantly after Reconstruction following the American Civil War. During Reconstruction, many African Americans moved to East Point to work as sharecroppers or servants for white residents while maintaining their own homes and businesses outside of town limits.
