The Coast Guard has been in operation in East Point, Georgia since 1885. The Coast Guard’s first station in East Point was located on Pee Dee Island. However, because of the distance from town and lack of resources, it wasn’t until 1916 that the Coast Guard built their current station on land east of Highway 1 near mile marker 176. In 1978, the Coast Guard made a grant to local businesses in order to build a beach front promenade along Bay Street in East Point which now includes gift shop, restrooms and a large parking lot. Today, the Coast Guard continues to play an important role in East Point by providing security and support for local events as well as conducting patrols throughout the area.
