Duluth, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 20,611 at the 2010 census. Duluth is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the University of Minnesota Duluth. The city is known for its natural resources such as oil shale and coal mining. The climate in Duluth varies from subtropical to humid continental with warm summers and cold winters. The first European settler in what is now Duluth was Ole Hanson in 1819. By 1830, there were over 50 American citizens living in what would become Duluth when it incorporated as a town on December 30 of that year. In 1837, George Washington Park was donated by John Aiken to be the nucleus around which a new city would grow. Duluth experienced rapid growth after incorporation; by 1840 it had eighty-six residents and two businesses; by 1850 it had 1,500 residents and nine businesses In 1856, gold was discovered at Red Mountain near present day Union City; within months the Duluth Mining Company had organized an effort to prospect for gold near their mine site on Newport Island (now part of downtown). For several years thereafter industry thrived while official development slowly ensued around Red Mountain Creek - until that creek became another victim of rushes following discovery of nearby deposits of silver (and other minerals) during the American Civil War . As hostilities developed between North and South over slavery issues – especially those affecting northern border states – many Union men enlisted or volunteered for Confederate service; some who did so lost everything they owned . According to one estimate up to 25 percent of all business activity in Duluth ceased due to war-related disruptions alone! In 1865 local businessman Augustus Saint Paul purchased land southward along Newport Island from David Dixon for $1 million – forming what would become Saint Paul Land & Water Co., which soon became one of America’s largest water companies supplying cities throughout the Southeast with drinking water—a monopoly that still remains today! This success ledSaint Paul Land & Water Co., together with partner James Guthrie & Sons Lumber Co., into developing what are now fabrication plants used in numerous high technology industries including semiconductor production starting back at Bell Labs…During this time period also real estate prices escalated rapidly northward towards Lake Superior making it an attractive choice not only for entrepreneurs but also developers looking to capitalize on newly opened market opportunities! After World War II much smaller manufacturing companies closed down or moved out east leaving behind large derelict factories scattered throughout southern Fulton County…..Today many people view downtown Duluthers rich history as something less than impressive given recent economic challenges……The most common complaint about downtown seems simplyto be lacklustre renovation efforts…..Despite this however many people maintain there are some great places to find historical tidbits such as old churches/synagogues etc….Although much has changed since our founding more than 200 years ago we continue à la carte dining experiences like our popular seafood restaurant MarketWine where you can enjoy fresh catch from our own dockless boat fleet or indulge in items like pastries etc….What makes us unique?
