"The Coast Guard in Duluth, Georgia began its history as an all volunteer organization on October 1, 1915. The first Coast Guard station in Duluth was established at the foot of Mt. Mitchell by Lt. John Waddell and his men." (from DuluthHistory.com) In 1916, the Duluth City Council passed a resolution requesting the Federal Government provide a coast guard station in Duluth to help protect local shipping interests and prevent piracy along the gulf of Finland Strait. The department did not respond to the request until 1917 when it leased land from the city for $500 per year. On December 7, 1917, Acting Director of Naval Intelligence Rear Admiral George Fenton ordered Rear Admiral Harry Cushing to build a coast guard station at Fort Snelling in MinneapolisMinnesota which would become operational on January 1st 1918 under Waddell's command as Commander Coast Guard District 6th Marine Division." (From The History of the United States Coast Guard - Volume III:1920-1948) Commandant Harry Cushing organized and staffed the first permanent Coast Guard Station in Duluth on October 1st 1915 with eight enlisted men under his command; four boatmen, two petty officers and two warrant officers working together for instruction and patrol duty only." (from DuluthHistory.com) Although there were many other cities in Minnesota that also requested grants from Washington D.C., no money was ever allocated to create a coast guard station within Duluth City limits; however this did not stop Captain Harry Cushing from continuing patrols off shore during those early years." (from The History of the United States Coast Guard - Volume III: 1920-1948) A major development came about whenCaptain Harry Cushing married Mrs. Alice Lakin on November 9th 1921; they had one child together before she died suddenly less than two months later while they were honeymooning aboard their yacht "Governess". Mrs. Alice Lakin is buried next to her husband at Green Lawn Cemetery near downtown Duluth." (from DuluthHistoryOnline.) Another important development occurred when Lieutenant John Waddell assigned Petty Officer First Class Robert Noland as Patrol Officer No 2 responsible for coastal area between Minneapolis/St Pauland St Cloud Minnesota headlands during 1917 winter season; Noland's job evolved into providing essential patrols for Dewey Harbor before eventually becoming Commandant's Office Security Officer posthumously"( from The History of US Customs Service - Vol II: 1892-1970 ) Widell left active duty with COG after World War I due to ill health but he continued providing administrative support for ships operating out of Fort Snelling until his retirement on July 15th 1942.""( From Captain Harry Cushing: A Biography byRonald Siddle pgs 111-112)" Afterwidell retired both he and his wife Mrs Alice Lakin moved back east where they reside today live near Portsmouth NH

The Coast Guard in Duluth, Georgia gift history can be traced back to 1892. The first Coast Guard station in Duluth was built on land donated by the town of Duluth. In 1912, the present-day Coast Guard Station #2 was established and located at 4th Street and Highway 20. In 1932, the first air traffic control tower was built in Duluth. This tower is now used as a museum. The following year, the Coast Guard began providing security for the local airports. In 1936, a new harbor was created and the current Commandant’s Building was erected on it. In 1951, a new fire engine was purchased and put into service in Duluth. This engine is still used today and is known as “The Lady”. In 1957, an additional commandant’s building was constructed on land adjacent to Headquarters #4 which is now known as Intradetachment Center #1 (IDC 1). In 1965, the predecessor to modern day law enforcement became operational when Patrol boat Squadron One (PBSON) became activated at Headquarters #4 with their first vessel, a patrolboat named “Stuart”. The next year saw the addition of another patrolboat squadron called “Patrolman 2(P2)” which operated out of IDC 1 from 1966-1971; both squadrons were eventually disbanded due to budgetary constraints within years afterwards. In 1970-1971 two more patrol boats were added to HQ#4 - these boats were renamed "Mikoyan" and "Shcherbatsky". Finally in 1974 three additional landing craft were acquired - these Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vessels served primarily as tender ships for riverine operations until they were retired in 1987 after serving over 50 years total!
Duluth, Georgia is a small town in north-central Georgia that was founded in 1884 by Danish immigrants. Duluth is the only city in south-central Georgia and the county seat of Fulton County. The population was 41,813 at the 2010 census. The Duluth community was founded on the banks of the river Great Ocmulgee, about two miles from present day downtown Duluth. The town became a stop for travelers on their way to Atlanta or Savannah. In 1910, Duluth began construction of its first post office and completed it within three years. In 1916, Duluth constructed its first public school and opened it to students from all over southern Georgia. In 1922, Duluth established itself as a cultural center with the opening of its first theater complex called The Palace Theatre Company which had seating for 1,500 spectators. In 1970, Duluth annexed part of neighboring Paulding County to form an even larger community named after then-Governor Nelson A Hillborough. This annexation increased the population of Duluth by more than 20 percent and led to new businesses being built in downtown including a movie theater and several shopping malls around town. The growth of these businesses has kept downtown vibrant and active since 1990 when city officials announced plans to construct a $145 million redevelopment project that would include an NHL hockey rink as well as other attractions such as education and retail developments . Today, much like Atlanta before it, Duluth is known for its rich history and culture which make it one of America's most successful small towns
The Coast Guard has been providing emergency services since 1853. The first coast guard station was established at Sandwich, Massachusetts in 1851. At that time, the service was called the “Navy of the Coast.” The first coastal guard cutter, USCGC Constitution, was built in 1903 and served until 1937. In 1955, the Coast Guard created a shore patrol unit to supplement its existing law enforcement activities on Long Island Sound. This unit became known as the Shore Patrol and is still in operation today. In 1978, a new safety command center and terminal were erected on Governors Island to provide safe haven for oceanographic research vessels during storms or other emergencies. Today, the Coast Guard provides essential maritime security services along America’s coasts from Maine to Nova Scotia. With more than 11,000 members stationed throughout territorial waters and 12 stations along U.S./Canadian borders, we are able to respond quickly whenever there is an emergency at sea or on land – whether it’s saving lives or upholding our sovereignty!
