Dublin, Georgia is a small town in the Glynn County, Georgia region. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dublin is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and has a mostly agricultural economy with a few small businesses. The first European settlers in Dublin were Irishmen who came overland from Ireland in 1802. They founded what became known as "The Old Fort" on what is now State Route 309. The fort served as a trading post and also housed a jail until 1814 when it was replaced by Dublin's present courthouse. In 1835, James Kenedy built his home near where State Route 309 meets Uptown Road to provide affordable housing for African American slaves who worked in his cotton plantations nearby. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House and slavery was abolished throughout most of Georgia, many freed black men and women moved to Dublin to start anew. Many Irishmen also followed suit because they were fearful that Reconstruction would return their country to Union rule. After two years of living in segregated neighborhoods during Reconstruction, many Irish-Americans decided that integration would be better for everyone involved – including themselves – so they moved back into integrated communities such as Dublin proper starting in 1868. Today's skyline view of downtownDublin can be seen from miles away thanks to its location on the banks of the Chattahoochee River which makes it easily accessible for tourists year-round (although access can be difficult due to high volumes of traffic).
