Douglasville was founded in 1836 by Col. James Douglas and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the Douglas family, who were early settlers in the area. The original townsite was on the east side of what is now downtown Douglasville. In 1839, a sawmill and grist mill were built in nearby Peachtree Corners. By 1850, Douglasville had a population of about 280 people. In 1860, Douglasville became the capital of Georgia. It was renamed Atlanta in 1868 after its founder, Gov. John Cushing. In 1906, new legislation prompted the relocation of most of Atlanta's government to Gaithersburg, Maryland; however, some officials remained in Douglasville until 1911 when they moved to Richmond County Park near Decatur for continued governance purposes. After World War II ended in 1945, many businesses closed and residents migrated away from Douglasville as its population declined significantly during the postwar years as a result of various factors including loss of jobs at steel mills and other industries throughout Georgia and nationwide during the post-war boom period.
