The Douglas National Guard has a long history in the city of Douglas, dating back to 1892. The first national guard unit was organized inDouglas on July 5th, 1892 with six soldiers from Georgia. The unit served as a militia until 1898 when it joined the United States Army and was redesignated the 1st Infantry Regiment, Douglas National Guard. After World War I, the regiment was mustered out of service and disbanded on September 25th, 1919. On October 3rd, 1922, the 1st Infantry Regiment was reactivated as an all-volunteer military academy unit atDouglas and named for General John Pemberton who had been killed in action in 1917. The regiment served as an all- Volunteer force until 1966 when it became an all-National Guard force under the command of Lieutenant Governor Robert J. Dole. In 1998 after passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA),the 1st Infantry Regiment reorganized itself into two brigades which were renamed 2nd Brigade and 3rd Brigade Combat Team Douglas National Guard respectively under Commander Major General Michael Smedley USARNG). Today, both brigades are still providing support to local law enforcement through their combined resources including infantry units; artillery; tanks; Air Force assault helicopters; and special operations forces capabilities. Additionally these units offer educational opportunities for cadets through weekend training encampments located throughout eastern Georgia each summertime.
