The Douglas community has a rich military history dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. The town was originally known as “Fort Pillow” because it was strategic location for guarding the entire Peach Bottom area. The first unit of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized in Douglas on December 15, 1864. A total of 377 men were recruited in Douglas and other surrounding communities throughout the state for service during World War I. After World War I, Douglas continued to grow as a military town and saw its first significant deployment during World War II. The town became home to Headquarters and Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment (the “Iron Brigade”) which served in Europe from July 1944-July 1945. In addition, Unit 548982, also known as the “Dougherty detachment” arrived inDouglas on October 3rd 1941 under command of Lt Col Cecil C Dougherty II with orders to establish a Liaison Office with American Military Mission at Cairo, Egypt; this detachment remained until September 1946 when it left for Okinawa Island where it joined Marine Corps Reconnaissance Squadron VX-7 [now Marine Aircraft Group 25]. Today, Douglas is home to two active duty US Army divisions (1st Armored Division and 1st Infantry Division) as well as two Reserve brigades: 560th Armor Regiment and 571st Armor Regiment. It also houses an airfield used by both Air Force Reserve Command (AFCON) units stationed throughout Southeast Georgia Air National Guard wings located at Macon Municipal Airport and Demorest Municipal Airport
