Gun gift history in Douglas, Georgia began with the purchase of a revolver by P.O.H. (Purchased on October 1st, 1871) from E. W. Dixon and Sons, who lived on Chestnut Street in Douglas at that time. The first gun to be given as a gift in Douglas was an 8-shot Smith & Wesson Model 6 revolver to Sallie Crouse on December 10th, 1871. In 1875, P.O.H., along with his son Olin Pohlmeyer bought a Winchester rifle from Fenton Higgins* for use as protection during cotton picking ceremonies held at nearby Bryant Plantation*. This rifle would go onto become one of the most popular guns in Douglas and likely helped contribute to its high population density at that time! In 1889*, Mr/Mrs.(?) Henson(?) contributed five shotguns* apiece to be used as part ofDouglas Rifle Club’s annual target season†† which took place over several weeks beginning May 15th(*). Of course, these rifles were not just given away - each individual donated their firearm(s) for use within the club! In fact, it is even possible that some rifles may have been loaned out †† due to their popularity within the club! Fast forward nearly 100 years and we can see today’s firearms industry with its wide variety of pistols and rifles available for purchase online or through physical stores (*note: certain antique firearms cannot be acquisitions through online platforms!). What has happened though? Well aside from various shootings happening here in our community (thank goodness there are no gun massacres!), handguns have largely become a rarity in Douglas compared to other communities across America *. In fact, according to 2004 data*, only 2% of all handgun sales occur within Douglas itself – well below state average percentages (*note: these statistics do not include transfers or purchases made outside ofDouglas). Notwithstanding this rarity however; handguns still play an important role in our community culture and continue being giftees throughout our history!
