Douglas, Georgia is a small town in northeast Georgia. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Douglas was founded in 1853 by space settlers from Earth who named it for General David Douglas, an American officer who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as United States Ambassador to Chile. The first post office in Douglas opened on November 1, 1853. The original town plat included a hamlet called "New Hope" which was demolished in 1934 because of its similarity to Homestead, Pennsylvania. At the time of its founding, Douglas was one of only two towns in northeast Georgia that had not been incorporated yet. It still enjoyed a degree of autonomy until 1959 when it became one of thirteen Gwinnett County townships within the newly formed county government.
