Douglas is a city in east-central Georgia. The population was 29,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Douglas County. The city was named for General and Seneca Chief Douglas, who aided American forces in the War of 1812. The town began as a post office established by Alexander McGillivray in 1814, and grew rapidly due to the mineral resources nearby. By 1840, Douglas had over 2,000 residents and was incorporated as a town under the name "Douglas". In 1851, it became an independent city and changed its name to "Douglas". In 1886, Douglas became part of the newly formed Alabama Territory when that state was created from parts of Georgia and Mississippi. The city continued to grow throughout this time but faced several challenges including a natural disaster in 1889 which destroyed most of downtown; construction on new highways; and numerous fires which caused extensive damage. However, during World War II Douglas played an important role as one of three cities within Alabama's military boundaries (the other two being Tuscaloosa and Birmingham) responsible for providing food, fuel, munitions and other support to Allied troops fighting in Nazi Germany. After World War II ended however Douglas experienced significant decline with high levels of crime rates (especially youth gangs) until the late 1990s when overall crime rates began to drop while also increasing funding for public safety initiatives. In 2001, following approval from then-Mayor Art Acevedo Jr., Douglas re-opened its downtown core as a vibrant mixed-use district with both retail stores along Oneida Street as well as housing developments located near Interstate 85 / Ulysses S Grant Boulevard. This redevelopment helped revive Downtown Doug into one of Atlanta's most active economic areas where businesses offering services such as healthcare/legal assistance/dental work are now available without fear of criminal activity or theft
