Douglas is a town in Iberia County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,854 at the 2010 census. Douglas is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Douglas in 1821 when Captain John Smith and his men were timberjacks along the Chattahoochee River from their trading post on the opposite bank. They named their new settlement for General James Douglas, who had fought at Yorktown and other battles during the American Revolution. The town was first called Douglas Creek until 1836 when it became known as Iberia after Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's group of explorers reached that area in 1539. In 1852, a railroad was built through Iberia County by entrepreneur J.P. Morgan and entrepreneur George Rogers Clark with assistance from General Ulysses S Grant of the Union army – helping to establish an important link between Savannah and Atlanta – which led to increased development of Douglas and its adjacent townships including Decatur, Jonesboro, Lithonia, Alpharetta and Sandy Springs. From these early days until World War II there was growth in both business and industry throughout Douglas as well as elsewhere within Iberia County due to trade with nearby states such as Alabama, Florida ( via Mobile Bay), Tennessee ( via Chattanooga) and Georgia (via Augusta). The Coast Guard was established on July 29, 1915 by an act of the United States Congress. The Coast Guard is a service that provides law enforcement and rescue services along America's coasts. The first coast guard station was built in Hampton Roads, Virginia in 1915. In 1937, the Coast Guard moved from its original location at Fort Steuben to a new headquarters located on Constitution Avenue in Washington D.C. In 1950, the Coast Guard became an all-volunteer organization and changed its name to the National Defense Reserve Fleet Corporation. The CG merged with the Navy Reserve in 1997 to form the National Security Sealift Command (NSC). The NSC is responsible for managing and operating U.S. maritime assets including merchant ships, naval vessels, cutters and helicopters oceanographic research platforms (OSPRs) and coastal protection systems ashore or afloat throughout America's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The history of gifts to the Coast Guard began during World War I when American citizens donated food items such as flour, sugar, coffee beans and other products to help support military efforts abroad. During World War II more than $1 billion was exchanged through gifts and donations throughout America's economy! From 1945-1997 there were 287 CG installations across America!
