The Douglas Volunteer Infantry Battalion was mobilized on December 5, 1861 and ordered to join the Confederate Army. Douglas was chosen as their muster point because of the high population density in the town. The battalion was mustered into service on January 10, 1862 and served under Lieutenant Colonel James H. Mahone. From January to April 1862, they were stationed at Fort Pulaski in Georgia until they were transferred to Fort Donelson in Tennessee where they remained until May 2, 1862 when they were ordered back to Arkansas Valley for duty with General Braxton Bragg’s army there. They arrived at Corinth, Mississippi on May 9th and stayed there until June 14th when they moved north and joined General Bragg’s army at Newtonia Heights near Uniontown for the Battle of Chickamauga that resulted in a Union victory. The battalion then returned south and engaged in various actions up through September before being honorably discharged on October 15th. After their discharge from the military, members of the battalion formed a camp aroundDouglas where they raised a flagpole for a new business called “Gift Shop” which still stands today (now known as Grady Museum). After their service in the Confederate Army ended, many Douglas residents donated items or money to help equip or purchase equipment for Confederate units fighting against the United States during the Civil War including: 1) A cannon donated by Captain John Waddell; 2) A cavalry horse donated by Major Wesley Sibley; 3) A wagon donated by Mrs. George Fenton; 4) A sword donated by Captain John Prentice; 5) Helmets and other war gear donated by Captain Jno Pemberton; 6) Clothing donations from Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Neely; 7) Money contributed by Dr., Drury & Sons storeowners who also raised flags for Confederate units throughout their property

On November 8, 1824, the Douglas County militia were called into service to help suppress a slave uprising in Athens.
