Doraville is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. In 2009, Doraville was named One of America's "Best Place to Live." It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town began as a small farming community near what is now Decatur Street and Peachtree Road. A post office called Doraville was established in 1877, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town growth originated from two factors: trade with surrounding counties for goods brought by farmers to market, and the presence of an railroad station on the Atlantan Southern Railway which allowed goods to be delivered quickly and easily to local businesses. In 1886, GEOFFREY WHITE built a sawmill on the Chattahoochee River just east of present-day Doraville. This mill became one of the largest mills in north Georgia and helped make Doraville one of the most prosperous towns in south Alabama during that time period. The first school in Doraville was organized on October 15th, 1887 under instruction from Miss Anna Coxe (1857-1946). Mrs John Pemberton donated land for a school building which opened its doors on November 1st, 1888. After many years of dedication by Mrs Pemberton and many students who attended her classroom/schoolhouse; Mr Jno Cook donated landfor an addition which included classrooms/hallways/a playground/bathing facilities & more! On September 20th 1951 “Mrs” Cook passed away leaving behind an amazing legacy - her School continues today as our 3rd floor Community Room! Classes begin each day at 7:00am sharp! Today we are excited to share this wonderful building with allof you – it has been renamed our current School Name – “Doraville Elementary”!
