In the 1930s, Doraville experienced another economic turnaround with the arrival of black Americans as workers in the local cotton mills. The town became known for its hot dogs and hamburgers, which helped to keep the community going during difficult times. Today, Doraville is a small community with a population of about 350 people. The history of Doraville begins with its founding as an agricultural village on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The villagers were farmers who grew corn, beans, peas, and other crops. By 1802, however, many of them had moved away because of low wages and lack of opportunities in what was then a rural area. In 1814-1815 some new white settlers arrived in Doraville from South Carolina; they started to build homes and businesses around what is now Main Street. From this period until well into the 19th century there was no real development or growth in Doraville; it merely functioned as an agricultural village that served mainly as a stopover on travelers’ routes between Decatur and Atlanta. In 1830s two factors began to change this: first came increasing numbers of blacks working in local cotton mills; second were dramatic changes within American society which led to increased social tensions across racial lines starting around 1830-32 called “the great migration†(Walsh 1990). This Migration involved large waves of African Americans leaving their plantations in SOUTH Carolina and Tennessee for northern States such as Illinois (and later Michigan), Minnesota (and later Wisconsin), Ohio (and later Pennsylvania) – all seeking Opportunity and education although often facing discrimination at every turn . While some Africans managed to find work relatively easily within these new social environments – such as those who worked at Western mill towns like Decatur – most faced significant challenges upon arriving in North America proper including meager paychecks and lack of access to education or housing opportunity . ManyAfrican Americans found themselves working long hours outside their home countries under hazardous conditions ; health risks also increased due to exposure to cholera , measles , typhoid fever & other diseases common among wading through mud bogs & water puddled streets during winter months ..Many African Americans also entered into indentured servitude during this time period
