He used her to transport goods up the river to Savannah then down to Mobile Bay where he would unload them before sailing back upriver. In 1846, Captain Edward Curtis ordered Jacksonville decommissioned because of budgetary concerns about coastal defense against slave raiders. Her remains were sold at auction on January 12, 1865 and she was re-designated as CSS "Virginia" (the first lady's namesake). The Decatur Navy gift history began in 1887 when Commodore John A. Cook donated a warship, the USS Constitution, to the city of Decatur. The ship was used as a training vessel and during World War I she served as flagship of the Sixth Fleet. The Constitution was decommissioned in 1922 and sold for scrap. In 1941 the City of Decatur gifted another warship, the USS Buchanan, to the United States Navy. She was used as an amphibious warfare vessel during World War II and again during Operation Neptune's Spear which located Japanese forces at Rabaul in New Guinea. The Buchanan was decommissioned in 1945 and scrapped in 1949. In 1951 the City of Decatur gifted another warship, the USS Ladd, to the United States Navy. She served as an escort carrier during World War II and was redesignated an Essex class corvette in 1944 after being lost with her namesake ship off Okinawa Japan on 5 July 1944 while escorting Task Force 58 (1942). The Ladd was recommissioned as USS Ladd (CVA-7) on 25 October 1946 and served until struck from naval service on 14 August 1950 due to budget cutsbacks within naval services caused by Cold War tensions between America and Communist China. After being stricken from Naval Service she was sold for scrapping on 30 September 1952.
