Decatur is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Decatur Regional Airport. The first European settlement in what is today Decatur was made by Frenchmen on October 14, 1751 as Fort Presque Isle de la Motte which they named after their captain of artillery and aide-de-camp Pierre-Jacques d’Acre (1685–1758). French traders established a trading post here in 1775 under the name of La Defense du Fort Niagara (Fort Niagara from 1772 to 1800). In 1801, part of Alabama became Georgia Territory when it was detached from Mississippi Territory; Decatur became its capital. The city served as the capital for six years until Athens replaced it in 1832 with Decatur becoming one of two cities in Georgia to receive federal patronage – along with Augusta – underJames Kenedy’s administration as governor of that state during Reconstruction. In 1865, following the American Civil War and Atlanta’s incorporation into the Union as a new state, Decatur lost its status as an independent town when it merged with other towns within Fulton County to form what would become known as Atlanta proper. As part of this process, all vestiges of local self-government were eliminated except for granting free access to public education through schools established withinAtlanta Proper by act of Congress on November 16th 1870: these schools continued even after annexation into Atlanta proper by that city. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest occupied Decatur while Confederate troops fought against Union troops near Chattanooga Tennessee. The town was sacked and burned by Union forces on Christmas Day 1865 as part of an aggressive campaign called “The burning of Atlanta” which destroyed most of Atlanta He also notes that this event marks one point in time where African Americans took part in white-controlled America without being classified as such

In 1840, Decatur became an incorporated city and in 1861 it seceded from Georgia and joined Alabama.
