Decatur is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 156,912. The city's history can be traced back to 1806, when it was founded by General Andrew Jackson as Decatur County Seat and named for his hero, Jonathan Decatur. In 1820, it became an incorporated town and was renamed again to its present name in 1868 after General George Custer during the American Civil War as part of a peace settlement following that conflict.
