Decatur is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 18,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The name "Decatur" is derived from the French word "deux-cents". The early history of Decatur can be traced back to 1799 when General James Wilkinson founded a small trading post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1802, Decatur became part of the newly formed state of Georgia and was named its capital. Fort Stephenson was built nearby in 1803 to protect against Indian attacks and served as the city's first courthouse and jail until it burned down in 1835. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson ordered all US military forces out of Georgia because he felt that Reconstruction efforts were not working well for white people who were not black. As a result of this order, many African Americans left Decatur for better opportunities in other parts of America. However, some African American families did remain in Decatur and started a cotton gin and grocery store called Phenix City Store which still stands today. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans returned to Decatur and began businesses such as shops and restaurants again. In 1924, DECATUR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (now known asGeorgia Tech) was founded here by Drs John Pemberton and Robert Gordon Hargrave with $1 million from banker Paul Mellon Sr.. The institute helped Toombs College become one of Atlanta's leading universities while also giving rise to several notable entrepreneurs including Jock Mahal (founder of Atlanta), Donald Trump (real estate mogul), Steve Jobs (Apple CEO), Chuck Epps (NFL linebacker) and Weldon Johnson (presidential candidate). In recent years, there has been significant redevelopment taking place within downtown Decatur - including new housing developments along Peachtree StreetEugene Robinson Place directly across from DECATUR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY -Homes have gone up around every major intersection making it easier for pedestrians to get around; currently there are over 30 buildings with plans for even more development over time - making it one of the most vibrant downtown areas in metro Atlanta! It wasn't always easy being an African American living in rural Fulton County during segregationist times: trips away from home could sometimes take days or weeks due to travel restrictions put into place by white landowners/officials%. However since passage of Jackie Robinson's Law & Order Act 1964 decimated these Restrictions completely; today Black citizens residing within Fulton can walk/drive anywhere they please without fear or retribution!
