During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate forces burned down several buildings in Decatur including the original courthouse which still stands today. However, much of downtown Decatur remained standing and Today it offers some interesting architectural features such as two large granite clock towers which dominate downtown skyline and one of only three surviving examples of an earthworm trodden into brick - also found in Athens, GA In 1867 when Atlanta became the new capital of America, Decatur became part of Atlanta Township under jurisdiction of Cobb County but retained its charter as an independent city with its own government

Decatur is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, on the Decatur River. The population was 11,883 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and one of its nine municipalities. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Decatur were French traders who arrived in 1795 as part of a larger expedition to establish trade routes between Savannah and Mobile Bay. They named their town after Pierre-Jacques La Salle, Sieur de Saint-Castin, during his third voyage across the Atlantic Ocean from Quebec City to Newfoundland. In 1802, General Andrew Johnson ordered Colonel James Waco, an American Revolutionary War veteran and captain of militia unit known as "Waco's Rangers" to develop what would become Decatur as an agricultural center with stockyards and mills along the riverbanks. Waco developed a plan for creating a creek that would serve as a main feeder for the river system and named it Waco Creek after himself and his group's commander Major James Fayette Wortham (1763–1836), helped by engineer John Pemberton (1783–1846). In 1810, Decatur was chartered as a village by Governor Samuel Houston under Parliamentary charter #1123 AYTO 3/2; it became incorporated as a city on March 4, 1909 pursuant to Act 6383 SC 912; municipal charter #5254 AYTO 2/3 granted on December 15th 1915 . On January 1st 1920 – when Atlanta was created – Decatur became one of six cities in Atlanta metropolitan area which were then annexed into that city effective February 1st1920 . On July 1st 1965 – when Gwinnett County was formed – Decatur again became one of six cities within Gwinnett County which were then annexed into that county effective October 1st1965 . In 1990s there was some discussion about annexing neighboring counties such as Lawrenceville or Dunwoody because they had high concentrations of African American residents but no clear consensus appeared to be emerging so annexation did not take place
