Decatur is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 51,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The city was founded in 1802 by General Andrew Jackson as Decatur Plantation. In 1827, Decatur became part of the newly formed Umatilla Confederacy and participated in its secession from the United States in 1861. After Union troops burned down much of the town on December 12, 1865 during the Atlanta Campaign, General Sherman relocated most of the Confederate forces to Camp Hood near Chattanooga, Tennessee before abandoning Atlanta on December 17. The Freedmen's Bureau built a black school and dispensary in Decatur for African Americans until 1906 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1913–14, Decatur lost its status as a city when it merged with nearby Dunwoody to form Atlanta-Fulton County. The Third Ward community which had been located within downtown since 1802 retains some vestige of its independent character today as an enclave of Black Atlantans living close to one another but without municipal governance or services provided by either agency). In recent years there have been efforts underway by both locals and outsiders to bring back economic life to Downtown Decatur through various initiatives such as art galleries and small businesses; however these have faced strong resistance from someproperty owners who feel that their livelihoods are threatened by gentrification. Despite this challenge, Downtown has seen growth over recent years thanks largely to new development around MARTA stations (including nearby Midtown Station), Amtrak railtrack projects (such as Gwinnett Terminal), and increasing traffic along Interstate 85 from suburban lanes brought about by continued development along I-285 eastward into Snellville and Douglas counties. Today’s incarnation of Downtown is one where many different types of businesses operate side-by-side: restaurants/bars/cafes/nightlife venues; law offices; real estate; accounting firms; health clinics; engineering consultancies; software companies etc.; while several major MARTA stops are located within walking distance including Oneonta station (just north of downtown), Dunwoody station (just west of Center City), Peachtree Center Mall (northwest) and Millbrook mall (southwest).

Decatur is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 57,531 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Decatur County and home to the headquarters of the United States Postal Service. The first European settlers in what is now Decatur were Frenchmen who arrived in 1697 as part of a fur trading expedition under General Pierre de La Salle. The town was founded on March 24, 1788 by Captain John Jacob Astor with 100 wagonloads of goods from New York City on his way to establish a post office at what is now Savannah. In 1807, Decatur became an incorporated town under the name of Athens after its incorporation into Alabama Territory. In 1821, when Georgia became a state, it reincorporated Athens as Decatur and added land around it including present-day Decatur Street and Walker Avenue. At that time there were only 7 people living in Athens proper while 9 lived within blocks of where they sat today. From 1826-1829, Judge James Buchanan served as justice of the peace for Athens; he was later elected to fill that position for two terms (1829-30 and 1830-32). On February 26, 1830 he married Miss Jane Goodloe* (1794-1868), daughter of Judge John Goodloe*, one of the original grantees who had offered land for public school development in downtown Athens.* In 1837–38 he also served as assessor for Fulton County.* * miss Jane Goodloe's parents were Increase Marbury and Elizabeth Marbury/Fulton*.Judge James Buchanan has been honored by being buried next to George Washington inside Mount Vernon Cemetery near Mount Vernon House opposite Presidents Washington and Adams (pictured below).
