Coffee historians in Decatur, Georgia have traced the coffee industry to 1847 when a group of Italian immigrants founded a plantation near present-day Decatur. The Italians began roasting and selling coffee beans from their plantation, which grew into what is now one of the largest coffee companies in the world. In 1865, after several years of development, a company by the name of Peet's Coffee was founded in Decatur. The company soon became well known for its high-quality beans and continues to be a major player in the industry today.
Decatur is a city in metro Atlanta and the county seat of Fulton County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 145,827. The city is one of the most ethnically diverse in the United States, with a wide range of languages spoken on its streets and in its businesses. It is also home to two universities: Georgia State University and Emory University. The first Europeans to visit what is now Decatur were Indian traders who traveled along the Chattahoochee River in search of trade goods with Native American nations. French trader Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville discovered what became Decatur when he went looking for trade partners along the Savannah River in 1785. In 1802, General James Wilkinson founded Decatur Academy as a preparatory school for future military officers. The town grew rapidly due to agricultural production and industry that developed around it during this time period. In 1868, Decatur voters voted to incorporate as a city under the new state constitution. The next year saw major growth as railroads arrived and began serving as commuter destinations for workers throughout Georgia; this led to rapid development in commercial areas such as downtown, northside, Englishtownsouthwest, northwest Atlanta and Stone Mountain Park. By 1930, Decatur had become one of the largest cities in southeastern America by population size (behind New York City). Pre-packaged espresso machines were designed for businesses or individuals who wanted an easy way to make quality French press brewed coffee without having to go out and purchase fresh beans every time. These machines would simply place ground beans in a container with water and oil (or sometimes milk) and let them sit until ready to use. Pre-packaged espresso machines varied in terms of their design; some featured simple metal tanks filled with grounds that could be served hot or cold, while others featured more complicated mechanisms such as douchecans or pumps that could create multiple strengths of pressure (high, medium, low).
