Decatur is a city in metro Atlanta, United States. It was the county seat of DeKalb County from 1821 until it was consolidated with Fulton County in 1871. The city's history goes back to 1821 when Decatur was founded as a small community on the Chattahoochee River by General James Wilkinson and his army during the American Revolution. By 1870, Decatur had become home to an important military depot on the Chattahoochee River and had become an important center for trade and transportation within Georgia. In that year, Decatorians led by John Brown raided Fort Donelson outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee; however, they were successful in freeing all of their prisoners before withdrawing southward. However, this event demonstrated just how important Decatur would become as an economic center in eastern Georgia during the antebellum period. In 1871, after years of consolidation efforts by various counties in southeastern Georgia (including DeKalb), Decatur became one large county with a population of 309,812 people. At this point in its history, it played an important role in statewide politics as a key political hub for both Democrats and Republicans alike due to its location on I-85 (the main highway between Atlanta and Savannah). The growth of towns like Marietta and Smyrna throughout eastern Georgia meant that much larger cities such as Athens or Tbilisi would quickly outpace Decatur in terms of economic development; however, despite this competition from larger metropolitan areas across the state., Dekalb County continued to serve as Dekalb County's primary cultural center while most citizens lived within easy reach of downtown decaterville via public transportation or railroads.
