Dalton was platted as a town on March 10, 1881 by order of the Georgia General Assembly. A post office called Dalton was established in 1883, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town's first mayor was Wm. Latham Patton Jr.. In 1907, the cotton gin company built a new $3 million cotton gin south of downtown Dalton on Courthouse Square across from Town Hall. This new gin quickly became successful and supplanted the old local hotel as the primary source of revenue for both townspeople and the cotton Gin Company itself; however, due to its high costs (the construction alone cost $30,000), Dalton slowly lost its status as a center of industry during the 1920s and 1930s while other towns grew larger and obtained more economic success through their own industrial development programs). In 1965-1966, an effort began to revive interest in Dalton by creating a popular summer arts festival which drew professional artists from around central Georgia as well as out-of-state visitors like Hollywood stars Ronald Reagan and Joe McCarthy who were then visiting Muscogee County for various events celebrating America's "cultural renaissance." Unfortunately this event never achieved great popularity due to one main factor: inadequate infrastructure including no streetlights or power - leaving many spectators unable to see any artistic displays even after dark! Nevertheless, it remains an interesting footnote in local history that one attempt at cultural revitalization failed but another succeeded twice consecutively within less than two years
