Dalton's history dates back to 1821 when it was founded as a post office on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River by Captain John Dalton and his family. It has since undergone many changes, including becoming an African American-majority city in 1967; being renamed for General Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1988; and losing its status as Capital City to Atlanta in 2006. Dalton is home to numerous historical sites and attractions, including the John A. Andrew Museum of History and Art and The State Capitol Complex.
