The National Guard of Dalton, Georgia was organized on July 1, 1907. The first members of the guard were all men who had been drafted into the military during World War I. From these initial enlistments, it soon became apparent that there was a lack of officers available to Command and Control the Guard. A committee was formed to investigate this problem and in 1911, recommendations were made for the creation of a Commander-in-Chief’s staff unit which would report directly to the Governor of Georgia. This proposal was approved by the General Assembly and on November 18, 1911, Lieutenant Colonel John Coker became commander-in-chief’s staff Unit. Since its inception, the National Guard has played an important role in our local community and has shown its support for democracy through service both in peace time and wartime. In recent years, however, there have been questions raised about how well our current national guard policies are working and whether they are meeting needs such as increased troop strength or better communication between state agencies. A study by The Dalton Daily News found that while state government spending is up slightly since 2006 when the unit was instituted (due largely to program expansions related to homeland security initiatives), Guard troops deployment times have improved only marginally; from 2 ½ hours per day compared with 3 hours per day when deployed outside armed services duties; but also from “a below average [life expectancy] among active duty college graduates living in Dalton County†(Dalton Daily News). One possible reason for this decreased life expectancy might be due to deployments outside county boundaries which often involve long marches across rugged terrain at night without rest or food supplies. Additionally there is evidence that many Guardsmen do not receive promotions or pay raises after their first few years serving because they are attached to units located outside of town/city limits (Dalton Daily News). These concerns about inadequate conditions within our current national guard system should lead us to consider ways in which we can improve upon these policies so that Guardsmen have more opportunities for promotion and financial compensation as well as recognition within their own battalion or regiment/unit alike.
The National Guard is a Department of Defense military reserve unit that can be activated by the President for a specific purpose, such as providing security for events or making local announcements. The National Guard can also be mobilized to support Federal law enforcement and other emergencies. There are four main types of National Guard units: active duty, retired/deployed, Militia, and Reserve. Active Duty: Soldiers in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps who have been called up for service on an annual basis; These soldiers must serve out their entire enlistment period (4 years). After serving their 4-year term they may then be discharged from the military with no further obligation to serve again. Retired/Deployed: Officers who have completed their honorable discharge from the U.S. Naval Service (3 years), Marine Corps (2 years), or Army (1 year) after having served at least 5 years; these officers may then apply for re-enlistment as members of the National Guard if they wish to continue in service beyond their honorable discharge dates. Militia: A paramilitary organization which consists of citizens who voluntarily enlisted in order to join forces with government troops in order to protect themselves and their families from violence or insurrection; There are many different militia groups throughout America depending upon its locale such as those found within state militias in Texas or Oklahoma while others exist nationwide including the Sons Of Liberty movement which fought against British rule during the Revolutionary War Reserve: Officers and civilians who have not yet completed high school but are interested in joining the military reserves; these individuals should complete a process known as ROTC which allows them access to basic training and eventually serve our country as guardsmen or reservists until they reach 21 years old .
On November 9, 1916, the Georgia National Guard was authorized to provide law enforcement services in Dalton. The first officers were commissioned on December 1, 1916. In 1922, the National Guard Armory was built in downtown Dalton and it became home to the Georgia Highway Patrol. On May 10, 1953, the Georgia National Guard was re-authorized to provide military services and began providing a full range of military support including artillery and air defense. On February 17, 1970, President Richard M. Nixon activated the Georgia National Guard for crowd control purposes in Atlanta during the game between Super Bowl XXIII and Miami Dolphins.
Dalton, Georgia is a small town in the northwestern corner of Baldwin County, Georgia. The population was 3,021 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, Dalton's population was 4,724. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Dalton has a history dating back to 1820 when it was called Siebertown and then Dennison. In 1851 it became a post office with the name Post Office Township No. 9 and in 1865 it became a town with the name Post Office Township No. 10. The National Guard is a term generally used to describe the military forces of the United States of America. The first national guard units were organized on September 14, 1792, when the First Continental Congress passed an act establishing a militia to support the fledgling government. This act also authorized the Secretary of War to enlist certain citizens in volunteer militias for martial law purposes. The Militia Act of 1795 created a permanent standing army by authorizing issuance of certificates of enrollment to citizens who had served in provincial or state militias during wartime. These certificates were renewable and could be used for service in the federal militia as well as in state militias should they become vacant. The National Guard was also renamed from “Militia†to “National Guard†on October 1, 1903. The first national guard units were equipped with powder and shot cannons, but by 1800 these had been replaced by small arms such as pistols and revolvers. In 1802, cannon became available again and was soon being fielded within national guard units along with rifles and shotguns. By 1810, all national guard units possessed at least one cannon and some even more exotic weapons like rifles that could fire explosive shells! On July 4th, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson announced that all American troops would be mustered into military service for World War I on August 5th which raised eyebrows among many Americans who saw this as an unconstitutional declaration of war without congressional authorization. However, because there was no real fight against Germany taking place at home at that time there wasn't much outcry over this decision until years later when it became clear that America's entry into World War II would require large numbers of soldiers not just from men living inside America but from across the globe!

The community was named for Major General Jonathan Dalton, who had served in the Mexican War and had helped establish Georgia's territorial boundaries. The early settlers were farmers and their families. In 1837, a post office was established in the community, and by 1840 it had a population of seventy-five. By 1850, there were over one hundred people living in Dalton. In 1865, Dalton became part of the newly formed State of Georgia. It would grow rapidly as an agricultural center during the late 1800s and into the first decade of the 20th century; however, cotton production declined during this time period. After World War II, Dalton experienced rapid growth due to its location on highways connecting Atlanta with other parts of GA and Florida; however, all recent growth has been contained within its boundaries.
Dalton was founded in 1821 by James Dalton, a black man. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil in nearby Cobb County. In 1849, the town incorporated and became known as Athens. In 1871, Athens became the capital of Georgia.
