The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Dalton, Georgia was organized on December 9, 1939. The first shipment of Coast Guard supplies arrived from New York City on Christmas Day. The Auxiliary functioned as a voluntary society for the purpose of providing assistance to the local Coast Guard members. The Auxiliary became an official organization on May 1, 1942 when it was ratified by the State Legislature. On that date, the Coast Guard detachment at Dalton Station donated a new cutter to the Auxiliary in honor of its founders. In 1951, the Coxswain's Mate Training School opened at Dahlgrens Point and began offering training to future officers of the Coast Guard.
