The National Guard in Dallas, Georgia has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The first group of soldiers was called the “Dallas Company” and they served in the War of 1812. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered his army to move north and take Atlanta. The Dallas Company fought bravely but were quickly overwhelmed by the Confederate force. They surrendered at Gaines Mill on July 10, 1865. In 1917, the Texas National Guard was activated as part of World War I and served with distinction throughout Europe. After World War I, Texas Governor James Fenton appointed a state commission to study military needs for Texas. On November 3rd, 1920, Governor Fenton created the state national guard system and placed it under the jurisdiction of the Texan National Guard Bureau. The first unit to be assigned to Dallas was Company C of the Texas National Guard Infantry Regiment which was located at Fort Worth Army Air Field (now Wright-Patterson AFB). The Texans had some great commanders during this time including Major General John Witherspoon who commanded maneuvers in 1918; Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Ahern who led an effort to arm TX womenBTte forces during World War II; and Colonel David Jumper who became Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion 9th Marines after commandant Majestic Franklin Dillard’s death in 1945. Many Texans also served in Europe during World War II where many were awarded citations for their heroism such as Lieutenant Colonel Harry Hines who received two stars for heroism while commanding elements of Battery A15/36th Artillery during Operation Market Garden from September 1944 until October 1945; Captain James Meeks with 2nd Battalion 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment which liberated concentration camps near Amsterdam on April 15th 1945; Sergeant First Class Cecil Loyd with 9th Troop 16th Cavalry Regiment which participated in Operation Herschel Greene from December 1944 until January 1945; Corporal Roy Roberts with Headquarters & Support Battalion 106th Engineer Aviation Regiment which provided support for XXX Corps winter operations around Berlin on December 12-14 1944-January 81945] 2nd Lt Jeffery Bowers Service Badge Captain Jimmie Epps enlisted into USMC Reserve shortly after high school graduation 1959 1st Lt Alonzo Griggs enlistment into USAF Reserve soon after high school graduation 1961 First Lieutenants Darrell Nash and Rick Brewer: Enlisted into USAF Reserves soon after high school graduation 1963 2ndLt Jeffrey Bowers enlistment into USMC Reserve shortly before entering service 1966
