Dallas, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,898 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Georgia and the third-largest city on the Atlanta metropolitan area. Dallas is one of two cities located in Cobb County (the other being Marietta). It is part of the Atlanta–Fulton Combined Statistical Area. The first time that any Europeans saw Dallas was in 1795 when Captain James Cook sailed by and named it "Moody's Island." In 1836, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led a cavalry force against Mexican forces at Nacogdoches while they were besieging Fort Worth; Forrest lost three horses to a sniper fire during this battle. Afterward, he named his home and ranch "Fort Worth". However, there are several inconsistencies with this story: Fort Worth may have been founded as an earlier name for what became Dallas; or it could be that Forrest renamed his home after losing three horses - something which doesn't appear to be true given that he changed his name to Dallas soon afterwards. In 1841 Texasopher William Hogg founded what would become Oral Roberts University in Tulsa Oklahoma; Oral Roberts moved its campus from Topeka toDallas in 1957 after purchasing land east of downtown from Sam Houston State University. A few years later Parkland Baptist Church opened its doors near downtown serving as a hospital until 1971 when Parkland Health Systems took over operation of the facility.
