The history of the Coast Guard in Dallas, Georgia began with a group of men who volunteered to help protect the coastline from barkers and smugglers. The first coast guard station in the town was built in 1871. From that time until 1912, the Coast Guard manned a small boat called "The Delaware" which patrolled the waters off of Cape Hatteras. In 1912, Dallas became incorporated as a city and its first mayor was Wm. Leland Hitchman. In 1933, the Coast Guard Station at Constitution Hill was moved to downtown and renamed "Downtown Dallas". The name change came about because during this time, it was necessary for local businesses to have an easily identifiable sign telling customers which side of the street they were on when they walked into one of their stores. In 1954, Coastal Guardsmen were transferred from Fort Worth toDallas when that city became part of the US Federal government. This event is often referred to as “The Day Texas Became A State” because it marked the transition from Federal jurisdiction over state institutions (such as education) to full state control over infrastructure (such as law enforcement). Since then, both United States Coast Guard stations have been located in Dallas – DowntownDallas on First Street NW and Corpus Christi Island on Spring Branch Road NE. Each year around Memorial Day weekend, service members gather at each station for a potluck dinner and fireworks display before returning home early Monday morning. It is not unusual for these events to attract up to 4500 guests!

The Dallas, Georgia Coast Guard was founded in 1909. The first commander of the coast guard was Captain John H. Slaughter. In 1916, the Coast Guard Station at Jacksonville was renamed as the Dallas, Georgia Coast Guard Station. The station served as a subordinate unit to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Department until 1922 when it became its own department. In 1923, the Miami Beach Patrol was activated and Driggs County donated land to create a patrol station on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami Beach. The Miami Beach Patrol continued to be headquartered at the Dallas, Georgia Coast Guard Station until 1933 when it relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1936, Hurricane Hazel destroyed many homes along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline in Dade County and resulted in $1 million damage and lost income for local businesses. As a result of this event and with World War II raging on, Congress passed a bill providing for funds for coastal security operations which would later be used to fund both the coast guard and military functions of the Department of Defense. On July 1st 1941, Captain J C Pruitt assumed command of Coastal Command Unit One (CCU-1) from Captain W A Dudley who had been promoted to lieutenant colonel during World War I. Under Pruitt's command CCU-1 patrolled southern Alabama waters conducting search and rescue operations during hurricane season while also providing maritime fire support during naval engagements off Texas coast opposite Corpus Christi Bayou near Point Comfort Naval Air Facility south of Houston Harbor responsible for intercepting enemy merchant ships primarily using their infrared homing devices while utilizing manned torpedoes underwater if necessary or when other means failed; participating in joint Interagency Task Force Highjump which struck Japanese forces ashore at Balboa Harbor Philippines on December 8th 1941; participated in Operation Neptune's Spear which led to Japan's surrender that day
