The town of Cusseta, Georgia was founded in 1837 byGAZETTEER WILLIAM H. POWELL. The community of Cusseta was named for General George Washington's father, Colonel Nathanael Greene. Cusseta was a small agricultural community located on the eastern edge of the Creek Nation and it soon became an important stop on the Atlanta-to-New Orleans Railroad. In 1881, the railroad was abandoned and the community declined until it disappeared from maps in 1975. However, oral histories from early settlers have preserved much about Cusseta's history and culture. In 1837, William Henry Powell moved to what is now known as Cusseta with his family following a successful land purchase in neighboring Toombs County. He commenced farming and soon opened a store at what is now called Third street and Young Avenue in what is today downtown Cusseta. Powell continued to operate his store for many years before moving it to its present location east of Third Street in 1909. At that time, Powell also began developing his farm which eventually included acreage bordering on present day Mableton Road and 3rd Street east of town limits. The development included a large barn/kiln complex, several residences including one built specifically for Powell's widow (now known as Mrs. John Fenton), two churches (one Greek Orthodox, one Methodist), three stores(Powell & Sons, Mrs.(John)Fenton & Co., Jno(William) Dillard), mills(the first mill being powered by horses power), a blacksmith shop(originally used to forge cannons into pistols), five acres of gardens ornaments (including a wellspring used for water heating)and four hundred head of livestock including pigs, cows and hogs). Today portions of this property are still occupied by homes/ businesses while other areas are leased out or partowned by various businesses throughout the city of Atlanta such as Midtown Center Mall®, Philips Arena® (/ato/], Piedmont Park™ (/ato/], etc.). Powell's store continued to be open until 1907 when ownership passed from Mr.(John)Fenton&Co.(POWELL & SONS) to Jno(William)Dillard who operated it until 1922 when he sold it to Averill Harriman whose son became proprietor after Harriman sold it again in 1944 to Dr.(Eugene O'Neill). After Dr.(Eugene O'Neill)'s death in 1969 there was multiple succession contests with several different families owning the business until 1984 when it finally reverted back under Mr.(John)(MILITARY LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY OF AMERICA INC.) who operates it currently as part of Techwood Mall©/.
