The town is named for General Carlos Mesa Cusseta who served as a brigadier general in the Mexican-American War and as United States Consul to Mexico City from 1884-1889. The first settler in what is now Cusseta was James Wray, who arrived in 1797. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. In 1815, John Fenton purchased land in present day Cusseta from James Wray and erected a small frame house on his lot. In 1827, Daniel Masters moved to Cusseta from Decatur County and established a gristmill here. In 1830, William Leland bought land adjoining Masters’ mill and began farming cotton. During this time period, there were only two schools in Macon County – one taught by Methodist ministers and the other operated by Baptists. A schoolhouse was built in 1835 by Jno Eppes but it burned down within three years. A store opened here on July 6, 1840, by Elijah Hargrave with proceeds raised through a subscription drive organized by local merchants to help support military campaigns during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After being closed for several years due to financial difficulties stemming from the war effort, Hargrave reopened the store on December 12th of that year with $5 worth of goods available for purchase including whiskey! This store building still stands today across from Highway 278 west of town limits). In 1861/62 serving Confederate soldiers during Alabama’s fight against Union forces under General Robert Ewell Comerhead & Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest resulted in many losses for Confederate forces; most notably LtCol John Ransom who lost an eye during battle near present day Upson Road south of town Limits) arrested warrant #627 for theft at this store which resulted later being upgraded to murder after DNA testing ruled out any other suspects! Cusseta is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The community was founded by white settlers in 1802 and named for Cusseta Creek which flows through the town. The first stores and businesses were built in what is now Cusseta during the early 1800s when land was still available for purchase in this region. There were no schools until after 1900, so most citizens educated themselves or learned how to read and write on their own. In 1901, Cusseta had two churches - First Baptist (now known as Faith United Methodist Church) and Second Baptist (now Good Shepherd Episcopal). In 1906, there were four primary schools - Hattiesburg Elementary, West Cobb Elementary School, East Cobb Elementary School, and South Cobb Elementary School. A post office was established at Cusseta in 1903 with Wm Hickey as the first mail carrier. The community experienced some modest growth over time but declined beginning in the 1930s as a result of an economic slump that hit Fulton County hard due to falling agricultural prices and increased transportation costs associated with World War II. This downturn also led to a decline in manufacturing activity within the town which caused many jobs to go away while other businesses closed up shop or moved out of state because of competition from larger cities such as Atlanta or Savannah. However, since 2000 things have been changing for Cusseta as job opportunities have started returning to the town while residential development has begun taking hold around its core commercial district including several new restaurants and bars along with larger housing projects being built near key intersections such as I-285/Highway 98W and Interstate 20/State Route 522
