Cusseta is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,787 at the 2010 census. Cusseta is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Cusseta was the Spanish captain Andrés de la Hoz on October 25, 1565. In 1792, Captain James Cook navigated his ship "Endeavour" through the Strait of Gibraltar and sighted Spanish Fort on October 12th while sailing from Havana to St. Augustine, Florida. After landfalling in Georgia on November 3rd he discovered a small post of Spanish soldiers and traders at San Juan Bautista (now Cusseta). Spanish troops were stationed here until 1802 when they were replaced by American forces under General John Foust during the War of 1812. American occupation continued until 1821 when it was again returned to Spain under terms of the Treaty of Paris which ended that war. In 1865, Elisha Swayne built a sawmill and gristmill in what is today Cusseta about 5 miles northeast of present day downtown Cobb County for use by local farmers who could not afford milling their own grain because of high prices for flour brought about by cotton cultivation in America.
