In 1794, General Nathanael Greene established a military detachment in Covington to support his operations against the British. When Chilton returned home from duty in Mexico in 1846 he decided to marry one of these local women and return home for good; he named her Georgia O’Neill after his wife’s family’s plantation near Savannah, Georgia where he had been living prior to their marriage. During World War II several residents of Covington served within the military or were drafted into it; many became decorated veterans or heroes serving our country abroad or later returning home with medals and honors from various wars around the world including Korea and Vietnam both won by our nation through its servicemen/women! Covington is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2000 census. Covington is the smallest incorporated municipality in Fulton County. It lies on the north bank of the Chattahoochee River, about east of Atlanta and west of Decatur. Covington was founded by Methodists who purchased land from the Chickasaw Nation in 1802. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a main transportation route connecting Atlanta and Savannah. In 1892, Covington became part ofAtlanta as an annexe to that city. In 1898, cotton farming operations were discontinued and Covington reverted to forested land; however it continued to grow because of its close proximity to major highways and railroads. In 1924, Covington became an independent city under the name of Atlanta; however it reverted back to its original name in 1977 when Atlanta annexed it back into its city limits. On July 6th 1904 during a Congressional hearing on postal rates for Georgia residents living outside metropolitan areas (i.e., those within commuting distance), Representative John Lewis proposed that all post office boxes be closed within one mile (1 km) radius of any courthouse or other judicial building for general inspection purposes without need for letters or signatures from mail-box holders themselves: "I believe this will speed up our mail service." Covington is named after Captain John Covington who fought in the American Revolution and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that created the United States of America. The town was founded by Captain John Ladd and his family in 1837. In 1860, Covington became part of Alabama when it seceded from Mississippi. It remained an independent county until 1971 when it merged with Fulton County. The first settlers in what is now Covington were farmers who arrived in 1837. By 1860, the population had increased to around 100 people and many businesses were started in this early period including a blacksmith shop, bakery, grocery store, post office as well as a cotton gin and printing press. In 1871, Confederate General Alexander Stephens made an appeal for donations to help finance his cause during the American Civil War which resulted in much growth for both locals and newcomers alike; however due to economic problems brought on by war effort the community slowly slowed down over time while others grew larger and more successful than them.
