On October 6, 1817, the Covington Plantation was founded by John Crawford and his wife Rachel. The plantation was located in what is now Fulton County, Georgia. The first crops were raised on the property, and later slaves were brought to work on the plantations. In 1830, Crawford sold his share of the plantation to Andrew Jackson. The Jackson family lived on the plantation until it was sold to a group of investors in 1851 who renamed it "Covington Plantation". After being bought by a group of wealthy white men and women in 1892, it passed through several hands before becoming part of the University of Georgia's College Library system in 1913. Today, Covington Plantation is a historic site open to guests for tours from 9:00am-4:00pm daily.
