Covington was founded in 1820 by General James Wilkinson and named after the Danish town of Vordingborg. It was named for Samuel Pritchard Covington who served as U.S. Minister to Great Britain from 1827 to 1830 and as Collector of Customs for Georgia from 1830 to 1835. The cotton gin began production in the area around what is now downtown Covington in 1831 and made it possible for farmers to produce large amounts of cotton without having to go far away to market. Cotton became an important part of the economy of Covington because it allowed people to sell goods they couldn’t produce on their farms but could provide labor for mills that manufactured items such as cloth and textiles. The importance of cotton continued until World War I when large quantities were exported so World War II could be fought using other resources like munitions manufacturing plants that were built in nearby Macon County
