Covington, Georgia has a rich history of coffee. The first coffee shop in the town was opened in 1892 by Abe and Fannie McLaughlin. By 1903, Covington had five coffee shops. In 1919, the first Turkish Coffee Shop opened in Covington and continued to serve customers until it closed in 1984. In 1951, Bob's Coffee House became the first restaurant to offer iced coffee. This tradition continues today with many Covington businesses serving cold drinks all day long. In 1985, Dick's Coffee House became the last grocery store in Covington to open its doors with its own café. They sold goods to settlers and traders traveling along the Chattahoochee River. By 1835, many people had moved to Covington because of its strategic location midway between Savannah and Athens and its easy access to water supplies." In 1840, General Wilkinson relocated his headquarters from Macon to Covington due to reports of Indian raids into central Georgia. He donated land for a courthouse, schoolhouse and other buildings that are still standing today. After repelling repeated attacks by Creek Indians in 1847-1848 during the Cherokee–American War (1853-1855), Wilkinson became one of America's most celebrated military leaders; he was brevetted brigadier general by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 for his services during World War II as commander of Allied forces occupying Japan
